voluntary unemployment

« Back to Glossary Index

Voluntary unemployment occurs when individuals decide not to accept jobs even though they are available at the current market wage.

People may choose to remain unemployed for several reasons:

  • They are looking for a job that better matches their skills, interests, or salary expectations.
  • The offered wage is lower than their reservation wage, which is the minimum amount of money they are willing to accept to work.
  • They are currently focusing on education, specialized training, or family care.
  • They are in a transition period between jobs while searching for new opportunities.

Economists consider voluntary unemployment a normal part of the natural rate of unemployment. It is generally not viewed as an economic failure, but rather as a sign of individual choice and flexibility within the labor market.
